How to address health through planning?

This section provides the evidence base, case studies and tools to directly address health and sustainability through core planning work.

To more systematically address health through planning it is recommended that planners:

  • Address the “wider determinants of health”
  • Recognise the overlap between environmental sustainability and health agendas
  • Make use of the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment evidence base (a key evidence base document)
  • Be familiar with the Health and Wellbeing Strategy

Individual sections on each of these topics can be accessed via the menu on the left of the page. Each section includes links to further resources.

The key contacts in health and sustainability section will also be useful.

Once you have an understanding of the above issues we would recommend you explore the Joint Working section. This focuses on key practical topics that involve the crossover of planning, health and environmental sustainability that are important for Kent and Medway; it includes case studies demonstrating what has been achieved through joint working. The aim is to facilitate collaboration to more effectively address the issues which each sector faces.
